No Man’s Village

Thanks for helping out. Install the game through the itch app once and it keeps itself up to date: start it and team up with a four-letter code.

1Install

  1. Download and install the itch app, and sign in or make a free itch.io account in it.
  2. Open the game’s itch.io page, press Download and choose to open it in the itch app. There, press Install.
  3. Press Launch. From now on the itch app downloads each new version by itself.

Windows 10 or macOS 12 or later, and about 300 MB of space.

You need a graphics card from the last ten years or so. A mouse makes it much easier.

2Start it

Start it with Launch in the itch app. The game is new and unsigned, so the first time your computer may warn you:

On Windows

If a blue box says “Windows protected your PC”, click More info, then Run anyway.

On a Mac

If the Mac says it can’t check the app, click Done. Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway next to No Man’s Village. Confirm with your password, then press Launch again.

Rather not use the itch app? The game’s page has a zip for each system to download in the browser. Unpack it and start no-mans-village.exe (Windows), No Man’s Village (Mac) or no-mans-village.x86_64 (Linux), keeping the folder together. That copy doesn’t update itself.

3Play together

You start at headquarters. Up to four of you go in as a squad.

  1. One of you presses Host squad under Play together. A four-letter code appears: send it to the others.
  2. Everyone else types the code into Squad code and presses Join, then Ready.
  3. Once everyone is ready, the leader presses Deploy, picks the map and presses Deploy again.

A new raid starts every twenty minutes and you can join one already under way. Grab what you can and get to an extraction point before the bombers arrive at the end: anyone still in the village when they come doesn’t make it out. What you carry out is yours to spend at the Quartermaster.

Alone, Deploy works the same way, or choose Offline raid to play without anyone else.

Every key is in the Field manual at headquarters, and Settings lets you change them.

4When something goes wrong

  • The game crashed or froze. Start it again: it asks whether to send a report. Please press Send report, then tell Torsten roughly what you were doing.
  • It says the game server is on a newer version. Torsten has a new version up. Quit the game and open the itch app: it updates the game when it next checks, and Check for update on the game’s page in the app makes it look now. Your soldiers and stash stay where they were.
  • Anything odd, unfair, confusing or fun. Tell Torsten, or post it in the Discord. A screenshot and the time it happened help a lot.

This is an early build: expect rough edges, and progress may be reset between versions. If your Steam is open, it may say you’re playing “Spacewar”. That’s expected for now.
